Pop! was my first adventure in large scale crochet sculptures, hence the fact that I refer to this piece as the real OG.
I made Pop! for an invitational art exhibition at the end of 2014. The show was called Memory and we were supposed to focus on some aspect of memory in our pieces. I had recently gotten married a few months earlier and we had a carnival themed wedding. We served popcorn and cotton candy on our food tables and gave out gift bags complete with animal crackers, circus peanuts and pinwheels.
Pop! started out as a memory piece to reflect back on my wedding. But once I started making it I realized everyone who saw it would instantly have their own memories dealing with popcorn, whether it reminded them of going to the movies on their first date, going to a ballgame, or staying home having family movie night as a child. This pillow/sculpture can mean whatever you want it to.
After making it, it now holds even more memories than just those from my wedding for me. I basically binge watched Pretty Little Liars while making this, and I also ate a lot of popcorn in the process. XD I averaged crocheting about 1-2 kernels of corn per episode of PLL.
In total I would say this piece took about 5 skeins of yarn and half a box of Poly-fil stuffing. I probably spent about 2-3 months of working on this.
After the opening of Memory I had a few of my professors come up to me and instantly started telling me about the legendary Claes Oldenburg. I had never seen his work before I made this but now he’s one of my favorite artists. If you haven’t heard of him you should seriously look him up because he’s great.
This piece really started my fire for large scale crochet sculptures and it even won an honorable mention in a juried exhibition back in early 2015.
